A healthcare worker checking a patient's blood pressure

Not every staffing agency operating in Northern Ireland is held to the same standard. Here’s what’s worth checking before you commit to one.

Is the agency actually regulated?

In Northern Ireland, staffing agencies supplying care and nursing staff should be RQIA registered. Ask directly, or check our own compliance page for what that means in practice.

How are individual staff vetted?

At minimum, you should expect an enhanced AccessNI check, verified NMC or NISCC registration where the role requires it, full references, and confirmed right to work — completed before someone’s first shift, not after.

What happens outside office hours?

Staffing emergencies happen at 2am, not just 9-to-5. Ask whether there’s a genuine on-call team, or just an answering service that takes a message until morning.

Do you get a dedicated point of contact?

A dedicated account manager who learns your facility, your rota patterns and your standards makes a real difference over a call centre that starts from scratch every time you ring.

Can they actually cover your area?

Coverage varies a lot between agencies. See our breakdown of where we cover across Northern Ireland if that’s part of your decision.
